A Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary for 70 years, her funeral will be held at 11 a.m., February 6, in the Chapel of the Holy Names at Marylhurst. Burial follows at the Sisters’ cemetery.

The daughter of George and Lulabelle Fowler Richard, Mary grew up in Reedsport and Portland, Oregon. After graduating from St. Mary’s Academy, she entered the Sisters’ novitiate and received the name Sister Marian Arthur.

Sister Mary loved young children. She spent her years in the classroom as a primary teacher in several Holy Names schools in Oregon, which included 10 years in Medford where she was greatly loved by her students and their parents.

Sister Mary admired the words of the Little Flower, St. Thérèse of Lisieux: “Remember that nothing is small in the eyes of God. Do all that you do with love.” On leaving the classroom, she brought her bright smile and generosity to community service. Over time Sister Mary was receptionist at the Convent of the Holy Names and helped with tasks as needed in the Sisters’ Care Center. For a number of years she volunteered at the Albertina Kerr Center for Handicapped Children at Marylhurst where she did the laundry for the children. She also assisted in the Registrar’s Office at Marylhurst College and tutored and worked in the school library at The Madeleine School, Portland.

Sister Mary is survived by her sister-in-law, niece and nephews and the members of her religious community. Remembrances may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Names, P.O. Box 398, Marylhurst, OR 97036 or online at www.snjmusontario.org/donate.
