Sister Agatha Aicher (Florence), a vowed sister of the Holy Names for 59 years, died September 9. She was 84. Sister Agatha was born in Woodburn, Oregon. She attended Mount Angel Academy and attended Marylhurst College. She worked for Oregon Public Welfare Commission for two years, before entering the Holy Names Novitiate in the summer of 1949, soon taking the name Sister Mary Agatha.
After making her first vows, she began a long career in teaching Oregon at St. Francis School in Eugene, St. Mary’s Academy in Portland, St. Mary’s in Medford, Sacred Heart Academy in Salem, and Star of the Sea in Astoria. She earned a master’s degree in history from the University of San Francisco and joined the faculty at Marylhurst College.
For more then 20 years, she joined a team at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham, Washington, working as a chaplain. She is survived by her sisters and brothers, nieces and nephews and members of her religious community.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated St. Anne’s Chapel on the Marylhurst University campus.
