Luella Rose Fischer

February 24, 1931–October 9, 2011 (Spokane, WA)

Luella Rose Fischer was born February 24, 1931, in Dickinson, North Dakota, the first of three girls born to Joseph and Frances Emmil Fischer.  She graduated from St. Aloysius Elementary School and Holy Names Academy High School.  She entered the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, pronouncing her vows in 1952 as Sister M. Deborah Ann.

Sister began her life of ministry by cooking for the Sisters, especially for those in the Care Center, but when she was asked to be the Infirmarian, participating in the hands-on care of the Sisters, she discovered gifts for caring that led her to study to be a Licensed Practical Nurse.  She continued to be of service to her Sisters until 1973 when she was hired by Sacred Heart Hospital in the Pediatrics unit.  This ministry tapped into her gifts of service and her love of children.  A special light and joy were evident on her face whenever she spotted a baby!  This was especially true with her sister’s children!

In 1989, illness ended that part of her life and she came to Convent of the Holy Names as a patient herself.  By 1992, S. Debbie again resumed her life of service within her religious community.  She worked in the main laundry for the Care Center, but her favorite things were cooking, baking and giving parties!  She and her sisters would provide an array treats to tempt everyone for most any occasion!  They also provided delightful decorations for every holiday.

When S. Debbie was unable to do the work she had been doing, she did continue to provide thoughtful and caring gestures to others, and to tend to any pets within her reach, giving and receiving love and affection.  We have lovely memories of her walking dogs, bringing coffee and cookies to our support staff, and singing down the hall with whomever would join her!

Sister Debbie died October 9, 2011.  She is survived by her two sisters, Vivian Fischer and Bonnie (Rick) Haugen, her nieces and nephews, and her religious Sisters.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Names Retirement Fund, 2911 W Fort Wright Drive, Spokane, WA  99224.

Funeral Mass is scheduled for Friday, October 14, 2011, at 10:00 a.m., Convent of the Holy Names, 2911 W Fort George Wright Drive, Spokane.
