Sister Aloysia Maria, SNJM
Cecilia Harnan

Cecilia Harnan was born July 6, 1912, in Seattle, the second youngest of seven daughters of Catherine Hogan and John Harnan. Mr. Harnan chose Seattle as a desirable city in which to raise and educate his daughters, especially after meeting the Sisters at Holy Names Academy where he enrolled his daughters. Cecilia completed elementary and secondary school there, and graduated in 1931. She entered the Sisters of the Holy Names a year after her graduation, the third Harnan daughter to do so. The Harnan family was actively involved in St. Joseph Parish in Seattle, and the religious names of the three reflect the Jesuit influence. The eldest was Sister Ignatia Maria, next, Sister Loyola Mary, and the youngest, Cecilia, became Sister Aloysia Maria. She graduated from Holy Names College with a B.A. in Education and began her teaching career.

Sister Aloysia Maria taught middle and upper grades from 1934 to 1973 in Parochial Schools in Oregon and Washington from Astoria to Everett. She enjoyed the uniqueness of each child, and her belief that "Teachers learn from their students as much as students learn from them" showed her openness to them. She began her ministry of pastoral visiting in 1979, both in Seattle and in Spokane, and continued that up to about year ago through as many as three hundred letters a month! Her pastoral activities included visiting the homebound, conducting prayer services, visiting those in the juvenile detention center who had no one else visiting, and spending time bringing hope and comfort to prisoners. She always had a special heart and hope for those in jails and prisons and for those without many advantages. She treasured her ministry of prayer and happily included anyone in her daily "special intentions." It was her joy to lead the Sisters in praying the Rosary. One of her outstanding life-long characteristics has been a gracious hospitality. We will miss her hand reaching out to us with strength and a full heart.

Sister Aloysia Maria led a very intentional life being mindful of others and exercising deep care in her interactions. She was true to her word and to the Word of God within her. Her fidelity to her religious vocation for over seventy-five years has been graced, and her heart has been full of gratitude. She often mentioned her love of family and her appreciation of their support of her choice of vocation. She graciously shared her family with her religious Sisters along with the gifts they brought, often in the form of chocolate!

Sister Aloysia Maria is the last of her siblings to die. She is survived by her nieces Marcia Dalton (Wally Fiore), Janet Dalton Paroline (Lewis), Diane Dalton Murphy, Denice Dalton, and her nephew John Dalton (Susan), and their children, as well as her religious Sisters and many beloved friends.

Sister Aloysia Maria died Monday, March 15, 2010. Funeral service is scheduled for Monday, March 22, at 10:30 a.m., at Convent of the Holy Names, 2911 West Fort Wright Drive, Spokane, Washington. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Names Retirement Fund, 2911 West Fort Wright Drive, Spokane, WA 99224
