Holy Names Sisters first stopped in California during a voyage from Quebec to the upper end of the West Coast in 1859. Soon after, they returned to California to stay.

Today, some 300 Sisters and Associates minister in the state, based in five Mission Centres concentrated in the Bay Area and Southern California.
